General legal information
Legal Line gives free legal information to Canadians and CLEO Legal Services Information provides information on getting legal help. The Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) controls Ontario lawyers and paralegals licensees.
Legal problems guide
The Handling Everyday Legal Problems guide has information on Ontario’s legal system and the types of legal services available to help you with your legal problems.
Lawyer referral service
The Law Society Referral Service provides a lawyer referral service where you can see a lawyer in your area for a 30-minute free consultation.

In case of a crisis you can call the crisis line and speak to a legal information officer to find legal help.

Legal aid clinics
Legal aid is available if you need legal help but cannot afford lawyer’s fees. Legal Aid Ontario provides help for a variety of legal problems, including criminal matters, family disputes and immigration and refugee hearings.
They offer different kinds of legal services, depending on the client’s needs. Legal assistance is available through the certificate program, which entitles clients to receive advice and representation by private lawyers or by legal aid staff lawyers. To apply for a legal aid certificate, you must attend in person at a local Legal Aid office:

If you are eligible for legal aid, you can get a legal aid certificate that you can take to the lawyer of your choice. Legal assistance is also available relating to tenancies, Ontario Works and disabilities through the community legal clinics.
