Canada has updated its citizenship laws through Bill C-3, which has now received royal assent. The new law will allow Canadians who were previously excluded under outdated rules to pass citizenship to their children born or adopted outside Canada.
When the law comes into force, people who would have been citizens if not for the first-generation limit or past rules will gain Canadian citizenship.
Moving forward, Canadian parents born or adopted abroad will be able to pass on citizenship to their children born or adopted outside Canada, as long as they have a substantial connection to Canada.
The law will take effect on a date to be announced by the government. Until then, the interim measure for those affected by the first-generation limit remains in place.
