Changes to the Start-up Visa and Self-Employed Persons programs to help reduce backlogs and improve processing times

May 8, 2024

Canada is implementing changes to its federal business immigration programs to reduce processing times and application backlogs, effective April 30, 2024. The Start-up Visa Program will see improvements by capping the number of applications processed per year per organization and providing priority processing for start-ups supported by Canadian capital or Tech Network incubators. Additionally, the Self-Employed Persons Program will pause application intake starting April 30, 2024, to focus on processing existing applications due to increased processing times. Restricting application intake until 2026 and increasing admissions for the federal business category aim to reduce backlogs and wait times while attracting talented newcomers to fuel Canada’s economy.
