The Canadian government has introduced Bill C-3 to modernize citizenship laws. Currently, Canadian citizens, by descent (born abroad to Canadian parents), cannot pass citizenship to their children born outside Canada due to the first-generation limit. The new bill aims to:
-
Automatically restore citizenship to individuals who lost out because of the current limit or outdated laws.
-
Allow future citizenship by descent beyond the first generation if the Canadian parent spent at least 1,095 days (3 years) physically in Canada before the child’s birth or adoption.
The goal is to reflect modern Canadian family realities and uphold fairness and inclusivity in the citizenship process. If passed, more details will be shared for those affected.
