One of the first things you will have to do when you arrive in Peel region is find housing. Peel region has various types of housing options available. You can choose to either rent or buy your own house.

Furniture Bank

Furniture Bank is a non-profit organization that provides gently used or new furniture and household items for a fee to eligible individuals and families in need, including newcomers, low-income households, and those transitioning from homelessness.

Mortgages and financing a house

If you are looking to buy a house, your first step will be to apply for mortgage. Banks or mortgage brokers can approve you for a mortgage.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has important information to help you prepare and understand about mortgage planning, managing, and mortgage fraud and payment.

Housing subsidy

You may qualify for housing subsidy if your income does not allow you to find a suitable place to live. Government programs pay for social housing; it provides reduced rent costs for tenants.

Peel Region manages the housing subsidy on behalf of the Ontario government. You can complete the housing services screening tool to have your name added to the subsidy waitlist. You no longer are required to complete a PATH application, your screening will be your application. Make sure you keep the waitlist information updated.

Currently, the waitlist for housing subsidy in Peel is long, and it may be several years before you can receive your subsidy. 

Shelter

Shelters are safe places to stay. They are generally free or charge a small fee based on your income. They also have counselling, support groups for women and children, referrals to services such as legal or health services.

Some shelters can help you get a free 2-hour counselling session with a lawyer. Contact a shelter or a community legal clinic for more information.
