Canada renews commitment to welcome people affected by the conflict in Sudan

Feb 20, 2025

Canada is strengthening its commitment to supporting those affected by the conflict in Sudan by expanding refugee resettlement and family reunification efforts. Since violence erupted in April 2023, Canada has played a leadership role in coordinating international responses and assisting its citizens and permanent residents in Sudan.

The government will resettle up to 4,000 Sudanese government-assisted refugees by 2026 and support 700 additional Sudanese refugees through private sponsorship, waiving certain documentation requirements.

Additionally, the family-based permanent residence pathway will increase its application intake from 3,250 to over 5,000, allowing approximately 10,000 people to reunite with their families in Canada. Starting February 25, 2025, new applications will be accepted under this pathway, with expanded eligibility beyond Quebec.
