Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Student Program to ensure integrity and protect students from fraud. Minister Marc Miller announced the end of the temporary policy allowing students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus, effective April 30, 2024, with a new limit of 24 hours per week starting in the fall. This change aims to prioritize students’ focus on studies while providing limited work opportunities. Students with academic breaks during the summer session can continue working unlimited hours. The new policy considers student needs, international practices, and research on the impact of work on academic performance. Additionally, a Recognized Institutions Framework is being developed to reward post-secondary institutions maintaining high standards for international student support. These reforms aim to support and protect international students while ensuring program integrity.
