Canada to launch humanitarian pathway for people affected by the conflict in Sudan

Jan 2, 2024

Canada expresses deep concern regarding the ongoing conflict in Sudan and remains committed to the safety and well-being of the Sudanese people. Our support continues for those in Sudan who are working towards peace and an end to violence in the nation.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a new family-based humanitarian pathway. This pathway is designed for both Sudanese and non-Sudanese nationals who were residing in Sudan when the conflict began on April 15, 2023. It aims to facilitate their permanent reunification with family members in Canada.

To qualify, applicants must be a child of any age, grandchild, parent, grandparent, or sibling of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident currently living in Canada. The family connection in Canada must also agree to provide support and assistance in helping them establish their new life in Canada. Additional details will soon be available on the IRCC website, allowing individuals to prepare their application through this pathway.

These initiatives complement existing temporary immigration measures for Sudanese temporary residents in Canada unable to return home due to the situation in their country. The measures also extend to family members of Canadians and permanent residents who fled Sudan and arrived in Canada before July 15, 2023.

Canada is actively collaborating with the international community and regional partners to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Furthermore, we are contributing to international assistance efforts in Sudan, including funding for emergency food and nutrition aid, clean water, hygiene, sanitation, health, and protection services. Our commitment remains steadfast in working alongside our partners to address the needs of vulnerable individuals affected by violence and insecurity throughout the country.
